Who is a Leader?

A leader is someone who influences a group of people toward achieving a common goal.

But more than that, a leader is someone who sees the potential for something better — a clearer path, a brighter future — and then inspires others to move in that direction.

They don’t just chase a vision alone; they bring others with them. And in doing so, they always keep people at the center of everything.

What Leadership Is All About

Leadership isn’t just about giving orders or having a fancy title. It’s more about shaping a shared vision and helping others believe in it. Here's how it typically shows up:

1. Visioning

  • Setting core values
  • Endorsing those values in action

2. Creating an Impact

  • Using influence rather than authority
  • Making people feel seen, heard, and empowered

3. Big Picture Thinking

  • Willingness to take smart risks
  • Leading meaningful change

Different Views on Leadership

There are a lot of opinions on what makes someone a leader.

Some say it’s all about personality traits. Others believe it’s a skillset — something you learn over time. And then there’s the idea that leadership is a process — not a fixed state, but something built through relationships and interactions.

It’s about how you connect with others, how you influence, and how you show up consistently.

“Leadership is a function of knowing yourself, having a vision that is well communicated, building trust among colleagues, and taking effective action to realize your own leadership potential.” — Warren Bennis

Leader vs. Manager

While both roles are important, leaders and managers do different things — and they approach challenges differently.

Here’s a quick breakdown:

LeadersManagers
Inspire people to follow themHave people who work for them
Think about the future visionFocus on the tasks at hand
Can be individual contributorsTypically supervise people or tasks
Guide people toward successTell people what to do
Willing to give up controlLike to direct and set structure
Care deeply about the peopleCare mainly about metrics and numbers

Final Thought

Being a leader isn’t about power — it’s about purpose. It’s about inspiring, guiding, and elevating others.

So don’t just manage… Lead. Be an inspiration.
